Mixology Tours (and Mojito Recipe)

Amelia Island Restaurant Week  has a fun new addition: the strolling Historic District ‘cocktail party’ that is the  Mixology Tour  hosted by Amelia Island Tasting Tours, offered on January 16, 17, 23, and 25. The two-hour tour starts at 5:30PM and  stops at four popular watering holes, allowing guests to meet the bartenders and learn about the fun, specialty drinks. Participants will get to try different cocktails and vote for their favorites. While walking between stops, your guide will provide the history of cocktails – and bootlegging – here on Amelia Island.  

According to Tour co-founder Tara Meyer-Robson, “No one ever realizes how much actually goes into making a craft cocktail. One thing we’ve learned in doing these is how incredibly skilled the bartenders downtown are, and how rarely they get to show off that knowledge.  On the Mixology Tour, the bartenders get to teach people about the craft of making a cocktail in a personal, individualized way.”

Find more information on the Mixology and on Tasting Tours here.  Here’s a popular cocktail created by Cody Adams, upstairs bartender at the Crab Trap (we hope it will bring a nice, warm island feeling to wherever you may be.)

Cucumber-Basil Mojito
  • 4 -6 basil leaves
  • 2 thick slices of cucumber
  • 3 tsp simple syrup (or finely granulated sugar)
  • 2.5 oz white rum
  • Splash of lime juice
  • Splash of club soda
  • 3/4 cup ice
  • Slice of cucumber, for garnish
  • Martini shaker
Put basil into the bottom of a martini shaker. Muddle the basil just until slightly bruised; you just want to release the flavor, not mash it entirely. Break the cucumber slices in half, squeezing them over the shaker to release some cucumber juice, then drop them in the shaker. Add simple syrup, rum, lime juice, and ice to the shaker, and shake it up. Pour into a glass with ice, and top with club soda. Garnish with a slice of cucumber and enjoy!

 Restaurant Week is a great time to try out new restaurants or enjoy old favorites.  This year, we have 30 Amelia Island restaurants participating, with everything from upscale dining to casual bites. Guests will also have both lunch and dinner options this year, with different restaurants participating in each. Lunch and dinner will both offer a special fixed menu, with lunch priced at $12 and the dinner option priced at either $19 or $29 per person.  Check out all the options here – but don’t wait too long to make your reservations!
