Ghost Tours Year-Round

With hundreds of years of history encompassing colorful characters including conquistadors, pirates, witches, Victorian millionaires, and more, Amelia Island is full of discoveries, many best made on foot while exploring the 50-block National Historic District.  One way to give your exploration a special, supernatural spin, is to book one of the island's popular ghost tours (available all year long but especially perfect for fall and for Halloween.)  The tours encompass many of the town's most beautiful historic homes, many of which are currently Bed and Breakfast Inns. According to tour guide Diane Blanton of Amelia Island Ghost Tours, "cooler weather seems to stir the spirits up. A history buff with a passion for psychic phenomena, Blanton encourages guests to bring their cameras to capture paranormal activity.  Her tours take a bit over two hours and cover about 1.5 miles.  Regular tours are $15 for adults and $10 for those 16 and under. They meet at Fred's parking lot (22 S. 8th St.) and take place at 8PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.   You can book online or reserve by calling 904-548-0996.  Private tours are available on Monday-Wednesday at a price of $20 for adults and $15 for those under 16.  (Bring four friends and your ticket is half price.) The first spoken history museum in Florida, the Amelia Island Museum of History also offers guided tours of this "city of restless ghosts," tours begin at 6PM every Friday and last about on hour.  Tickets are on sale at the Museum and are $10 for adults and $5 for students.  Meet in the cemetery behind St. Peter's Episcopal Church (801 Atlantic Avenue.) If you'd prefer not to stroll the streets, there is another, historically interesting option:  look for ghosts and learn about local legends from the comfort and style of a horse-drawn carriage with the Old Towne Carriage Company, 904-277-1555.
